Abd ar-Rahman 7 was called `Abd al-Rahman b. `Abdallah b. `Uthman b. Rabi`ah al-Thaqafi, `Abd al-Rahman b. Umm al-Hakam al-Thaqafi, and Ibn Umm al-Hakam. His mother was Umm al-Hakam, a sister of the caliph Mu`awiya 1: Tabari XVIII, pp. 192, 193, 196. In AH 53 (Dec. 672-Dec. 673) `Abd al-Rahman b. Umm al-Hakam al-Thaqafi led the winter campaign into Byzantine territory: Tabari XVIII, p. 166. In AH 51 (Jan. 671-Jan. 672) he was governor of Mosul: Tabari XVIII, p. 137. In AH 58 (Nov. 677-Oct. 678) he was placed in charge of al-Kufah (cf. Al-Dahhak 2) but was removed after a year, in AH 59 (Oct. 678-Oct. 679): Tabari XVIII, pp. 192-196, 198, cf. 199 (his dismissal in AH 59).
