In 699 Abd ar-Rahman 2 revolted against Arab rule, became master of Persia and expelled "the Khagan" (i.e. al-Hajjaj 1): Theoph. AM 6191. In the following year he was defeated and killed by Muhammad 2 and al-Hajjaj 1: Theoph. AM 6192. He is `Abdulrahman ibn Muhammad ibn al-Ash`ath; cf. Shaban, Islamic History I, pp. 110-111. He was actually defeated early in 701 and died in 704; see Shaban, loc. cit.
