Floruit

This records in general terms the century during which an individual was alive [floruit is Latin for 'she/he was active']. The century is given in Roman numerals, so VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII or XIII are possible values for this field.  For some individuals, their active period may straddle two centuries, so an entry such as VII-VIII or XI-XII would be a valid entry. Where possible, specify parts of the century, using E, M and L to represent early, middle and late respectively.

This index provides a list of the floruit periods in the purple banner-header, from 'E VI' to 'L XII'. The presence of floruit periods so clearly outside the coverage of the PBE I website is because the dating of some seals cannot be determined more securely than a range of several centuries. Choosing one of the floruit periods by pointing and clicking will produce an alphabetical list of names recorded for that period in the pink sector on the left. Grouped beneath each name is the number for each PBE individual recorded for that floruit period, with their floruit span indicated after the number. (This can be useful when one is searching for a named individual whom, for instance, one knows to have died in the late seventh century; individuals with the same name whose floruit span is 'L VII/E VIII' can obviously be omitted from the search.) The list of names with their associated numbers and floruit spans is 'scrollable' using the navigation bar to the right of the list of names.

The list of names from a different floruit period may be accessed by pointing and clicking on a different floruit period in the list in the purple banner-header. This process may be repeated as required.

The individual records for individuals mentioned under a name in the floruit listing may be accessed by 'pointing and clicking' on the identity name.  The biographical entry will appear.  The biographical entry is scrollable using the navigation bar on the right of the biographical entry.  This process may be repeated as required.  A different biographical entry may be accessed by pointing and clicking at a different number under a name (or indeed under a different name) in the floruit range listing of names.

When reading a PBE I biographical record on the white, right-hand, side of the screen, one may encounter other PBE I individuals mentioned - in the form of highlighted, underlined PBE I identity names. If one 'points and clicks' on such a highlighted, underlined PBE I identity name, the PBE I biographical record for that individual is displayed in the white, right-hand area of the screen, replacing the entry previously displayed. One may return to the PBE I biographical record of origin by 'pointing and clicking' on the highlighted, underlined PBE I identity name of the original individual (the highlighting will be in a different colour, showing that that PBE I biographical record has already been accessed); or by pressing the Back button on the web browser (further information on the functions of individual browsers will be found in the documentation which accompanied the software). This process may be repeated ad lib., though scholars are advised to take a record of the sequence of PBE I individuals' records they access this way, as it is often difficult to reproduce the same sequence on a subsequent occasion.
