Theophylaktos 7 was the son of a Rhangabe; he was droungarios of the Dodekanesos in late 780; he was one of the leaders of a conspiracy formed in October 780 (see Gregorios 11) against the new emperor Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) and his mother Eirene 1, which aimed to put Nikephoros 5 on the throne; he was among those arrested, beaten and tonsured and sent into exile: Theoph. AM 6273 (Θεοφύλακτος, ὁ τοῦ Ῥαγγαβέ, δρουγγάριος τῆς Δωδεκανήσου). It is not certain whether Rhangabe is the name of his father or of his family. See Winkelmann, Quellenstudien, pp. 145, 155. His office was that of admiral of naval forces stationed in the Dodecanese. He is to be identified with Theophylaktos patrikios, the father of the emperor Michael I Rhangabe (Michael 7): Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 489C (Μιχαὴλ μὲν Θεοφυλάκτου πατρικίου μεγαλοπρεποῦς υἱὸς ἦν). One of Michael 7's sons was called Theophylaktos (Theophylaktos 9).
