Theodote 1 was the daughter of Anna 13, niece of Platon 1 and Theoktiste 3, sister of Sergios 101, and cousin of Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite): Theod. Stud., Laud. Plat. 3 (PG 99, 805B, 809B). Theodote 1 was a relative (cousin) of Theodoros 15: Vita A Theod. Stud. 136D (συγγεν́ιδα), Vita B Theod. Stud. 253B (cited below), Vita C Theod. Stud. ¤19, p. 268 (ἀφ' αἵματος εἶναι τῷ πατρὶ).

A koubikoularia, Theodote 1 was crowned Augusta in August 795 by the emperor Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) and betrothed to him; the betrothal was illegal (παρανόμως) according to Theophanes: Theoph. AM 6287 (Θεοδότην τὴν κουβικουλαρέαν). They were married in September 795 (indiction four) in the palace of St Mamas: Theoph. AM 6288 (ἐποίησε τὸν γάμον ὁ βασιλεὺς μετὰ Θεοδότης ἐν τῷ παλατίῳ τοῦ ἁγίου Μάμαντος). A koubikoularia, she married Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) and was crowned Augusta after he put away his first wife Maria 2: Zon. XV 12. 21. She married Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) after he divorced his former wife: Vita A Theod. Stud. 136D (Θεοδότη ὄνομα τῇ μοιχαλίδι), Vita B Theod. Stud. 252C (ἧς τὸ ὄνομα Θεοδότη), cf. Vita Tarasii 39, lines 9-16, 46, lines 1-10. Allegedly head of the empress's cubiculum: Vita A Theod. Stud. 136D-137A (ἥτις καὶ ἀφηγεῖτο τοῦ τῆς βασιλίσσης κοιτῶνος).

A koubikoularia, Theodote 1 was the second wife of Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8): Theod. Stud., Epp. 22 (γυναῖκα Θεοδότην τὴν μαχλῶσαν: p. 59, line 67), 443 (εἴληφε γυναῖκα Θεοδότην κουβικουλαρέαν εἰς δεύτερον συνοικέσιον: p. 624, line 23), cf. Epp. 31, 514, 555, Catech. Parva 74 (unnamed). One of the Lives of Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) describes her as a nun when Constantine VI took her for his wife (τὸ μοναχικὸν ταύτης ἀπαμφιάσας σχῆμα - μονάζουσα γὰρ ἦν): Vita C Theod. Stud. ¤18, p. 267. As a cousin of Theodoros 15, she was persuaded by Constantine VI to send gold to Theodoros to try to end his opposition to the marriage: Vita B Theod. Stud. 253B (ἐξαδέλφη ἐτύγχανε τοῦ Πατρὸς ἡμῶν Θεοδώρου ἡ συστεφανωθεῖσα τῷ Κωνσταντίνῳ), cf. Vita A Theod. Stud. 136D (συγγενίδα, ὥς φασι, τυγχάνουσαν τοῦ Πατρός).

Theodote 1 bore Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) a son, Leo 10, on 7 October 796 (he died the following year); in 797 when her husband tried to flee from the conspiracy fomented against him by his mother Eirene 1, Theodote 1 accompanied him in his flight as far as Triton (ἐξῆλθε δὲ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ ἕως τοῦ Τρίτωνος): Theoph. AM 6289, cf. Zon. XV 13. 3-5 (birth and death of Leo 10), and see Theod. Stud., Ep. 31 (their child). She apparently bore him another child, still alive after 802; see Theod. Stud., Ep. 31, pp. 84-88 (τὸ μοιχογέννητον τέκνον ἐασάντων ἄκληρον ὡς ἀθέμιτον καὶ ἀνομώτατον: p. 86, lines 56-57; alluding in 808 to actions taken by the emperor Nikephoros I, i.e. Nikephoros 8). The marriage of Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) and Theodote 1 was a source of controversy thereafter: Theoph. AM 6301 (cf. Theodoros 15 and Ioseph 2).

Probably identical with the Theodote whose brothers were patrikioi and who were expelled from the imperial palace in 811 by the emperor Michael I (Michael 7) and his wife Prokopia 1: Scriptor Incertus 336 (cf. Anonymi 2).

She is perhaps the wife of Constantine VI (Konstantinos 8) who after his death became a nun and converted the house where her husband stayed after his blinding into a convent, naming it the convent of Metanoia: Ps.-Symeon 645-646.
