Kabalos 1 is named as one of those who instructed the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) in the arguments for iconoclasm; the others are Pastillas (Sisinnios 27) and Trikakabos (Basilios 29): Vita Steph. Iun. 128, 20 (1121C) (εἰς Παστιλᾶν, Τρικάκαβον καὶ Κάβαλον τοὺς αὐτοῦ καθηγητάς). The other two are well attested bishops, but the identity of Kabalos 1 is unknown; for the name see Auzépy, n. 212, who accepts the identification with Theodosius of Ephesus (Theodosios 3) proposed by P. Speck, Artabasdos der Rechtgläubiger Vorkämpfer der göttlichen Lehren. Untersuchungen zur Revolte des Artabasdos und ihrer Darstellung in der byzantinischen Historiographie (Poikila Byzantina 2, Bonn, 1981), p. 355, and note also Atzypios 1, another otherwise unknown name, at the end of a similar list of iconoclast leaders.
