Iohannes 516 was a native of Tergeste in Istria (Trieste) and was patriarch of Grado for thirty six years; he succeeded Vitalianus (Bitalianos 5) and was succeeded by his relative, Fortunatus (Phortounatos 2): Chron. Alt., p. 124. A naval expedition was mounted against him by the duces Ioannes 515 and Mauricius (Maurikios 15) from Venetia, led by Maurikios 15, and he was put to death; his successor was his relative, Phortounatos 2, who led a conspiracy of the Venetici, including Obelerios 1, to avenge him and overthrow the duces: John the Deacon, Cron. Ven., pp. 100-101.
