Young brother of the caliph `Abd al-Malik (Abdulmalik 1) and of Muhammad 2; he was appointed emir of Egypt by Abdulmalik but the actual government was entrusted to Athanasios of Edessa (Athanasios 4); he died in Egypt during his brother's caliphate (685-705): Chron. 1234, §149 (pp. 294- 295)(`bd l`zyz). He was the son of Marwan 1 and the father of Omar 2: Chron. 1234, §161 (p. 306).
